Some time ago I attended a training taught by distance learning system at Berlitz, Nagoya, where I teach Indonesian-. This is because since some time ago, Berlitz opened a new service to customers is a distance learning system based on the web, or often known as distance learning or e-learning. Services are directed to those who are busy or far away that it is difficult to come to Berlitz. Students do not need to come to Berlitz, but just sit at home or at work. Sitting in front of the television screen equipped with a monitor connected to the Internet network or web-camera, students can follow the teaching-learning process. Listened to the instructor of the television screen and simultaneously be asked via microphone and monitors. And instructors who were in Berlitz students can pay attention through the television screen as well. Teaching and learning can take place as normal sabagaimana direct the education system, although students and instructors are in different places.
Some distance education program in Indonesia:
1. Program Pendidikan Jarak Jauh S1 PGSD Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia
2. Pendidikan Jarak Jauh UMM
3. PJJ ICT S1 PGSD Universitas Jember
One day I met a lab partner. originating from Singapore busy with integral problems and other math problems. And I knew if he came in the lab. only as a guest researcher for 3 months. Stimulates my curiosity to ask. He explained that he was following a non-degree program at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) United States, with distance learning systems or distance learning. Every 1 month lesson modules sent from MIT. And he sent back the results of his work kapada MIT.
Two cases above are two examples of the many systems or patterns applied in the education system far away. When in Indonesia, we had never known the Open University (Open University). In Japan there are “Hozo Daigaku” by using a special channel on the television.
Distance education system is a method of teaching where teaching activities carried out separately from the learning activities. Largely because students residing far away, or separate from the location of the institution. Partly because of the reason the students busy so that he lived near the location of educational institutions can not follow the learning process at the agency. Separation of teaching activities and learning activities is a typical feature of distance education. Distance education system is an alternative to equal opportunities in education. This system can overcome some problems caused by some of them; limitations of teaching staff, the distance between educational institutions and students apart, the scarcity of qualified teachers, and more.
In some developed countries, distance education is an adequate alternative educational mainstream. Education system is followed by the children, students, employees, executives, and even housewives and the elderly (retirees). Several years ago, nearly all the distance education system is done by correspondence, or equipped with audio and video material. But, this time almost all the systems of distance education or distance learning, especially in America, Australia and Europe based on the web or information technology and can be accessed via the internet. The results of the survey in the United States, said that computer-based distance-learning is very effective, enabling 30% better education, 40% of time is shorter, and 30% lower cost. World Bank (World Bank) in 1997, has announced the program Global Distance Learning Network (GDLN) which has disebanyak partners in 80 countries around the world (until June 2000, a new operating center 15 countries, and 5 of them in Asia but not in Indonesia ). Through GDLN is the World Bank can provide e-learning to students 5 times more at a cost 31% less.
As a direct educational system or conventional, distance education systems also require supporting infrastructure of education, so that the general objective of education can diwujukan accordance with education levels. Means of supporting usually a lesson modules are sent to the students. Facilities can also implement information technology. The emergence of information and communication technologies in distance education is very helpful at all. As can be seen, with the emergence of online education or web-school or cyber-school, using the internet facility. Approach to the teaching systems that can be done is to make teaching directly (real time) or by way of using the system as the concentration of knowledge (knowledge). This allows the formation of an opportunity for anyone to follow all educational levels from kindergarten (TK) to universities (PT).
Unlike direct the education system, distance education system requires the management and educational management of “special”, both from the students and the instructor (teacher) for educational purposes can be realized. Education must focus on the instructional needs of students.
From the instructor (teacher), some important factors for the success of distance education system is a concern, confident teachers, experiences, easy to use equipment, creativity, active learning, and ability to establish interaction and communication with students remotely. Also consider the technical obstacles that may occur, so that distance education can take place effectively.
From the student side, one important factor is the seriousness of the following teaching and learning process at the time the instructor (teacher) does not deal directly with students. At this level, the involvement and the presence of ‘the people’ around, including family members plays an important and strategic. Its presence can support the ongoing teaching-learning process effectively, but instead may also become an obstacle. Another factor that is active learning and effective communication. Active participation of students of distance education affects how they relate to the material that will be studied.
The success of distance education systems supported by the interaction and effective communication and a maximum of intstruktur (teachers) and students, interactions between students with different educational facilities such as education modules mudul interaction between students with ‘the people’ around, and the patterns of education active in each of these interactions. Also active and independent study (kuliah jarak jauh) students in the material, doing the exam questions, and creativity to find supporting material from other sources such as the Internet or digital-library.
